If you’re like me, you spend most of your work days on what seems like a hamster wheel that never stops spinning. Emails, projects, texts, social media posts, reminders all constantly clammer for your attention. You wake up wondering how you’re going to get everything done, and you feel a knot in your stomach just anticipating who you will be disappointing.
I’ve had that feeling a lot. But instead of acting on it, I’ve found how to shut it up.
What does business alignment look like?
Abraham-Hicks is one of my favorite inspirational speakers, and they speak about the concept of alignment. In a nutshell, alignment is how you teach the universe to create your circumstances for you, based on your thoughts and emotions.
Remember that big knot in your stomach? If you keep thinking about all the things that you need to get done, and stressing about them, that knot will just keep getting bigger and bigger.
Rather, if you spend your time thinking differently, such as:
“I have enough time in the day for everything I need to accomplish today.”
“This isn’t the time for my work right now. It is my time to rest and/or play.”
I guarantee you will be able to get more done, faster, and in better quality.
Here’s an example of how this has worked for me:
Last month, I launched Making Waves. It involved a lot of heavy lifting on my end, carried over into today. I also have three new client meetings this week to prepare for and a large website rewrite to finish up.
This weekend, I was feeling the pinch of all this. I wanted to stay home and work, not play with my kids, not spend time with my family or my boyfriend, not attend my son’s soccer game, go to church, or enjoy some awesome art in my hometown.
But I kept reminding myself that this time too was important. It was as large an investment in myself as the time I would be spending on client work. Even though I resisted it initially, I spent the weekend soaking up the love of those people of those I care the most about.
Then, I woke up this morning, and instead of jumping right into client work, I took the time to shower, to eat breakfast, to meditate, and to read a chapter of a fiction book I’m enjoying. I put away the dishes. I went grocery shopping.
Only then did I sit down at my computer to do the work.
And do you know what? The tasks that were looming in my head all weekend? I took care of them all in two hours.
I know it sounds counterproductive – work less to accomplish more. But I will tell you: before I started doing this, I would end each day feeling completely depleted, and I wouldn’t get the things done that I needed to. The tasks I needed to get done today would usually take me at least 10 hours.
Changing your feelings = changing your circumstances. Try it out and be amazed at what shifts in your life!
